Where do the names of furnishing styles come from? Industrial, Japandi and others

Scandinavian, Industrial, Japandi, Coastal: the names of furnishing styles have now entered everyday language, but we rarely stop to ask where they really come from. Behind every label there is almost always a story, a place or a practical need that gave rise to a way of understanding the home. Here is the origin of the names of the collections you will also find in our shop.

Industrial: from the warehouses of New York to everyone homes

The name is the most direct of them all: the industrial style takes its name literally from industry. In the 1950s, in New York, many old disused warehouses and factories in the city centre were turned into homes out of pure housing need: they were large, cheap and available spaces. That conversion produced the first lofts with high ceilings, exposed brick, pipework and metal beams left on show instead of hidden. What today we deliberately choose as a furnishing collection (raw materials, metal, reclaimed wood) therefore comes from a concrete housing solution, which then became a visual language in its own right. Discover our collection Industrial.

Japandi: a word that did not exist twenty years ago

Japandi is a coinage joining Japan and Scandi (Scandinavian), which only became popular from the 2020s onwards, even though the affinities between Japanese and Nordic design have been visible since the last century. The name tells of the meeting of two philosophies: Japanese wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in imperfection and simplicity, and Scandinavian hygge, which puts warmth and domestic wellbeing at the centre. The result is a style that is essential but welcoming, never cold. Discover our collection Japandi.

Coastal: it was not born by the sea, but to recreate the idea of the sea

Contrary to what you might think, the Coastal style does not descend from one specific coastal tradition: it is a furnishing language created to evoke the atmosphere of the sea wherever you are, even far from the coast. Natural fabrics, a soft palette of white, sand and blue, materials such as rattan and light wood: the name describes a feeling, that of a permanent holiday, more than a precise geographical place. Discover our collection Coastal.

POP: the (colourful) legacy of the 1960s

The name refers directly to Pop Art, the artistic movement born at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s that brought bright colours, sinuous shapes and an aesthetic inspired by mass culture into people homes. The economic boom and new plastic production techniques made playful, informal furniture affordable for the first time, designed to express personality rather than status. Even today, when we talk about POP style in furnishing, we mean that same energy: bold colours, bold shapes, a room that is not afraid to be noticed. Discover our collection POP.

50s: the vintage elegance of mid-century design

The name is simply a reference in time: the 1950s, a decade that in design marked the move from post-war reconstruction to a new confidence in the future, made of organic shapes, tapered legs and colours that were lively but controlled. It is the style we also call mid-century today, able to look vintage and surprisingly current at the same time. Discover our collection 50s.

Retrofuturism: when the past imagines the future

The name comes from joining two apparently opposite words: retro and futurism. It describes an aesthetic that looks to the future with the eyes (and the shapes) of the past: soft lines and materials that recall earlier eras, reinterpreted with a visionary touch, almost vintage science fiction. It is a style that plays on contrast and surprise, perfect for anyone who does not want to choose between nostalgia and originality. Discover our collection Retrofuturism.

Chrome: when the material becomes the name of the style

Unlike other styles tied to an era or a place, Chrome takes its name directly from a material: chrome finishes, glossy and reflective, which have always conveyed modernity and technological elegance. It is a style born from the detail (the surface, the finish) rather than from a movement or a school of thought, and it adds an industrial-chic touch to any room. Discover our collection Chrome.

Ethnic: an umbrella name for many different cultures

The Ethnic style takes its name from its own nature: furnishing that draws on decoration, fabrics and craft techniques from different cultures and traditions around the world, bringing them together in a single room. It is one of the most eclectic styles precisely because the name does not point to one geographical origin, but to the richness of mixing different influences with personal taste. Discover our collection Ethnic.

Mountain: the atmosphere of the refuge, not just the mountains

The name recalls the imagery of the alpine refuge, but the Mountain style goes beyond the mountains in the strict sense: it describes an idea of a welcoming home, built on wood, stone and warm fabrics, able to recreate that sense of shelter and comfort regardless of where you actually are. Discover our collection Mountain.

Contemporary Classic: a name that is already a statement of intent

Here the name hides nothing: it describes exactly the balance the style offers, between the timeless elegance of the classical and the formal clarity of the contemporary. It is the collection made for anyone who does not want to choose between tradition and modernity, but wants them together, in the same room. Discover our collection Contemporary Classic.

Every style tells a different story: a place, an era, a material or an idea. In our shop you can explore them all and find the one that best tells the story of your home.
